Digit-al Dozen Does Books: Essie Are You My Mother?

 press sample
It’s Day 4 of Digit-al Dozen Book Week and I’m working my way through memorable books from my childhood. I knew that I wanted to work “Are You My Mother?” by P.D. Eastman (the same author who wrote “Go, Dog. Go!“) into the rotation. This book was pure comedic gold for my 3-year-old self. I mean, really? The baby bird asks a car? and a power shovel? Genius.

Did you know that Eastman was a protege of Dr. Seuss? He also worked at Walt Disney Productions in animation. Growing up, being an animator for Disney was all I ever wanted to be. But alas, there are some uber-talented folks out there and it turns out that I’m better at calculus than drawing…so I took a permanent detour. *sigh* Okay, back to the mani.

I wasn’t sure how I was going to pull this one off with polish. So again, I headed for the acrylic paint. I love that I can keep painting over mistakes until I get it right. Plus, Eastman’s style is painterly anyway, so my lines didn’t have to be fluid or crisp. I used all Essie polish for this look. The white nails are Essie Marshmallow. I love the soft white. The pointer finger is Where’s My Chauffeur.

Here’s a little peek at how I started the art. I just roughed out the shapes using Essie Mochacino. I had to add more Mochacino to the design as I went (as a matter of fact…I actually re-did the bird silhouette after I took this pic.) But it gives you the idea. After this dried, I went to work adding the paint, bit by bit until I liked it!
